I know this passage (1 Peter 3:4) was written to women at the time. But with the way modern culture has changed society, it could well be levied at both men and women. Both genders can be more obsessed with outward appearance than inner beauty and character.

What I find more interesting is that you cant see inner beauty in a moment. It takes time to get to know someone and see their inner character. God made us for relationship. To live in community. We weren't meant to base our 'fellowship' on a quick tea/coffee after a church meeting. To exchange pleasant 'how are you?' 'oh I'm fine thank you' conversation. But to live integrated lives, getting to know each other, bearing each others burdens and encouraging each other. If we can mix this integrated with both those who know Jesus and those yet to know him, then we can really let our light shine before men.
