One must read this verse in it’s entirety to refrain from raping the scriptures from their truths. This verse it not an verse supporting the lie of, “God will give me whatever I want” but in actuality conveys the exact opposite message. The human heart is sinful and we so strongly desire a god who will act as a our servant or our magical genie, giving us everything our hearts want. The verse has a condition and then a result. The condition is “Delight yourself in the Lord,” then the result will be “he will give you the desires of your heart.”

If we are delighting in the Lord, chances are we’re not going to be infatuated with material matters (i.e. bigger and better houses or cars, perhaps a nice boat, or a fat paycheck). Material is important to some degree, because it is material that keeps us alive, keeps our rent paid and our stomachs full. Material is also the means by which we can be generous to others. However, material is also a an idol in many American’s lives. Thus, if material is an idol in your life, it would not make sense that God would give you more material.

However, can we delight in the Lord and also desire material? One exception might be if God has placed a strong burden for you to be more generous in what you give to others. One man, I know personally, is going through a process where he feels that God is telling him to sell everything he owns (including his house), move into a trailer, perhaps strive to make more money in his job, all in the name of giving as much possible to local and foreign missions. This man, I’m sure God will bless in material simply because he is faithfully giving it away for God's desires. His desire is for the material, but because He delights in the Lord and even shares in God’s same desires.

If part of delighting in the Lord is sharing in His same desires. Then the Scriptures can confidently say that if anyone delights in the Lord, God will give him the desires of his heart.
