The "No Fair!" kid in all of us
A lot of the emotion we see in shopping during the holidays, politics year round, gossip about who should have gotten the promotion, and even watching our kids play sports all comes down to that "Hey, No Fair!" mentality we see in this parable, where we want everything to be equal somehow. I used to think I wasn't like this, that I was one of the few pious who never complained...that is until I discovered, after 4 years of trying for our second child and longing to have a son, this is the way I look at every pregnant woman or mother carrying a baby boy, especially teenage mothers or those with big families. Like the workers who were hired first, instead of rejoicing they had a job at all, they were complaining about the wages--the original ones they agreed to even! So this verse smacked me in the face. I get to be the mother of the coolest six year old girl in the world, so it's time to stop complaining and start thanking God for the amazing kid I have. And while I'm at it, I might even start thanking him for blessing those other women, too.
