Verse 21 is Paul's thesis statement for the verses that follow. Many versions incorrectly begin the paragraph with verse 22, "Wives submit to your husbands . . ." However, when diagramming this passage in Greek, verse 21 clearly refers to the passage following. In verse 22 and following, Paul describes in detail how mutual submission works in three types of relationships: wives and husbands, parents and children, and slaves and masters. This idea of considering the needs of the other in these relationships was revolutionary for its time. Paul uses relationships that historically were dominated by husbands, parents, and slave owners. In these verses, Paul says, Whoa, not so fast. Those of you in these traditional power roles should submit as well. Submit yourself to each other like Christ did on the cross for His bride. In Romans 12:4-5, Paul uses the language "each member (of the Body) belongs to all the others." Submission is the practical realization that we belong to each other as members of the Body of Christ! Living with that understanding is a key to healthy relationships and unity within the Body!
