LITERAL =
- Isaac is now fading out of the picture and the spotlight is turning onto Jacob.
- Isaac is 137, the same age his brother Ishmael died at, so he's thinking on the end of things, and decides to bless Esau.
- Maybe he didn't know of God's prophecy about Jacob (given to Rebekah); maybe he knew and forgot; maybe he knew and misunderstood it; maybe he understood it and chose to ignore it. We don't know.
- A birthright was a double portion of inheritance (land, wealth, etc); so Esau would have gotten 2/3 and Jacob 1/3 (Esau switched that, or basically gave up 1/3 of all Isaac's possessions that he would have eventually got- all for a bowl of stew; wasteful and disrespectful towards God)
- A blessing was a prophetic statement of what God was going to bring about to that child; if Jacob had not acted in deceit, he still would have gotten that blessing; just through a different way (so his action was pointless; he took matters into his own hands, and ended up screwing things up by creating further hostility between his brother's descendants and his own)

MESSAGE =
1. God hands out things to us (good and bad) for a variety of reasons,
sometimes based on our love of Him (that He knows of ahead of time; Deut 23:4-5), or hatred towards Him (think Pharaoh)
"For they did not come to meet you with bread and water on your way when you came out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram Naharaim to pronounce a curse on you. However, the LORD your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the LORD your God loves you."

sometimes based on the example we can set for others (think of God choosing the Jews to bring glory to Himself; 2 Cor 12:7-10)
"To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong."

never is it based on favoritism (Rom 2:11)
"For God does not show favoritism."

It is always a generosity on His part (Matthew 20:1-15),
" 1"For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire men to work in his vineyard. 2He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard.
3"About the third hour he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. 4He told them, 'You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.' 5So they went.
"He went out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour and did the same thing. 6About the eleventh hour he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, 'Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?'
7" 'Because no one has hired us,' they answered.
"He said to them, 'You also go and work in my vineyard.'
8"When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.'
9"The workers who were hired about the eleventh hour came and each received a denarius. 10So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. 11When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. 12'These men who were hired last worked only one hour,' they said, 'and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.'
13"But he answered one of them, 'Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Didn't you agree to work for a denarius? 14Take your pay and go. I want to give the man who was hired last the same as I gave you. 15Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?' "

And it is always for a purpose; He has something He expects us to do with that, basically to earn a 100% ROI (Mat 25:14-30, Luk 19:11-27)
"14"Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. 15To one he gave five talents[a] of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more. 17So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. 18But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money.
19"After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.'
21"His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'
22"The man with the two talents also came. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.'
23"His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'
24"Then the man who had received the one talent came. 'Master,' he said, 'I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.'
26"His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.
28" 'Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. 29For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. 30And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'"

2. So we should take what is given us, no more, no less. So know the 'why' and the 'what'.
As we are learning again and again, DON'T TAKE MATTERS INTO OUR HANDS! Be patient.
We are allowed to ask for more (David, Jabez, etc), but accept whatever God does or does not give
Whatever we get, rejoice and be thankful for it! Don't take it for granted (Grocery store analogy), Philippians 4:4-7
"4Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. "

Complaining, comparing, ignoring, revolting are all things for weak people. Strong, noble people are those who respond to the good and bad in their life the same way- with thanksgiving, with chin up in confidence (not arrogance), with maturity (and this takes the help of the Holy Spirit, so lean on Him)

3. Life is not about what we receive, it's about what we do with what we receive!
So pay attention to what God is giving you, and use it for His glory and the betterment of other people (think Joseph in Egypt)

4. Don't worry about your messiness; God knows it and will still work through you.
Jacob was messy, but God used him anyways. If anything, it's the messed up ones (who love God) that get chosen to accomplish the most.
Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Gideon, etc.

APPLICATION =

1. What is God giving you?
2. Are you appreciative for it?
3. What are you doing with it?
4. Don't give up, no matter how bad you get!

We are soldiers together for the King! We should be carrying each other along, cheering each other on, and walking side by side, as we fall, succeed, fall, fall, succeed, fall, succeed, succeed, fall, fall, fall….. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE WALKING AND GETTING BACK UP!!
