Luke 5:35-39 ASV

Luke 5: 35 Weddings and fasting

Jesus said "Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? 35But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast.” Two things going on here. First, Jesus was telling the Pharisees that it was ok not too fast while in the throws of a joyous calibration. The wedding feasts of the time lasted as much as a week. Remember Jesus turning water into wine for the wedding feast? (John 2) Some would say that in John 2 Jesus did the miracle reluctantly because it was somehow bad forum to do so. But here in Luke 5, Jesus clearly says that its ok to set aside some practices while celebrating. Personally I think that Jesus did not want to do the miracle in John 2 for the exact reason he said “Woman, why are you saying this to me? My time has not yet come.” The same reason that he told the leper here in Luke 2, go and tell no one. He was just getting ready for his missional teachings. He did not want the whole of Judea following him around asking for healing.

The second meaning of the wedding text, Jesus calls himself the bridegroom, thus his followers are the brides maids. We of the church are the bridesmaids. This theme is repeated many times through the gospels. If while Jesus was on earth, was the wedding feast, then what time period are we in now? And what would that have meant then? Go to Mat 25 and read the parable of the 10 bridesmaids. Obviously we are to keep watch, going out of out tents, watching but because he was so long, they fell asleep. Perhaps it’s a stretch, but later lamps and the light would be indicative of the Holy Spirit. Keep strong in the faith, read study and pray. Feed the Holy Spirit. Do not be foolish and let you light go out. Go out and look for Jesus. When He returns, you will not hear the call unless you are out watching and listening for Him. Soon we will have another wedding celebration to attend. Until then, keep strong, fast and pray, and keep your light burning.
