Ephesians 4:6 - We serve an Awesome God!
Ephesians 4:6 One God and Father of all, who [is] above all, and through all, and in you all.
In this passage the Apostle Paul continues his thought on the necessity of Unity of the Spirit, for the purpose of fulfilling our calling in Jesus Christ. That Unity in the Spirit is part of the unity of the body, the Spirit, faith, baptism and now in verse 6 the unity of God the Father. In this profound passage the unity is projected onto, into, and through the totality of everything that ever was, or ever will be.
One God and Father of all
God or "theos" is preface by "One" to show the exclusivity of the God Jehovah. Further God is denoted as the "Pater" (think of paternity) of the Father of all. The modern word Patriarch comes from this same Greek word. Without the Patriarch of a family, none of the family would exist. In the same way, God is the originator, the seed, the genesis of all things. As John 1:3 says: "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.".
who [is] above all
Not only is God the author of all things, he is the ruler of all things. The phrase "above all" is "epi pas" in the original Greek. "Epi" means over, or above. Many English words start with Epi such as Epidemic which means "over all people". Ephesians 1:2 says: "And hath put all [things] under his feet, and gave him [to be] the head over all [things] to the church"
and through all
The Apostle Paul is being somewhat coy in the original text referring to God the Father as the "epi pas", and next the "dia pas". "Dia" is another Greek preposition meaning "though". Dia is common in our modern English such as diagram which means "through drawing" and dialect which means "through language". In this instance the Apostle Paul is saying that God is dia-or through everything, dia-pas. Taken literally, this phrase means that every atom in every molecule in every organism has the presence of God. Not only has he created and rules over everything, but his fingerprint remains throughout every thing. Today as our scientists attempt to decode the genetic sequence, this literal interpretation seems less far fetched than it might have seemed fifty years ago. I suspect that the genetic sequence is just the tip of the iceberg of the wonder of God's fingerprint on his creation.
and in you all.
And finally, the Apostle Paul makes this wonder of God, this declaration of his awesome majesty very personal. God is in us all. From Mother Theresa to Charles Manson and everyone in between, God is in us all. He is all powerful, ever present, every where, and yet all ours. He loved each of us exponentially more than all of the love in the universe combined. Even though his fingerprint of ownership is in each of us, he has given us the choice to follow or not to follow him - because we are made in his image. Like father, like son and daughter we can choose. We are not robots. Chose this day to serve him with all that you have. Choose this day to love him with all that you have. Choose this day to accept his forgiveness for all the times you have not followed him. Dedicate your life to the one who knew you before the beginning of time.
