This passage is usually taught through the focus of love and its definition while ignoring or minimizing the inclusion of gifts. Some even try to use these verses to say some gifts no longer exist (v8). Paul's purpose here wasn't just to define love. Chapter 13 is sandwiched between chapters dealing with spiritual gifts. This chapter's true intent is to explain how to exercise the gifts of the Spirit. He lists all the things that love is not for us to examine ourselves (1 Cor 11:28, 31) and be sure we are using our gifts properly and keeping love as the motivation.
