The Worst of the Worst
"Even as the rest." We have too high an opinion of ourselves. We can always find others who are much much worse than us. There are so many examples of vile, wicked, evil people in the news these days that we must be ok by comparison. God has to be pleased with us or at least somewhat pleased because we are not like them. We couldn't possibly be under the same judgment and wrath as them. After all, we've attained a certain level of righteousness or good.
But, that is not the implication here. Our natural state or condition was that of wrath. Apart from Christ, we were by nature "children of wrath" just like the vilest person you can think of. There is no division or classification in this verse. We were all born into the Wrath family. The same thing working in us is working in the vilest of the vile. We are as vile as the vilest before the holiest of the holy. The word “wrath” speaks of God’s abiding opposition to evil (Matthew 3:7; Romans 1:18).
