This statement of purpose by the son of God is both specific to the events at hand and transcendent relating to the glory of God thru salvation. Meeting the immediate happiness of others is not in the game plan of God. He is after the eternal joy of a personal relationship, and that business will be addressed by Jesus when he goes to be crucified and then conquers death thru being resurrected. Jesus’ statement about concern reminds us that God is the ultimate judge of our human “preparation”, If we have not prepared ourselves to offer our best, then why is that Gods fault. God is there at the wedding, had the host thought to ask before hand what needed to be done then God might have revealed a better plan for this event. At the same time if this is the best the host has to offer and offers it freely, then why would he have anything to worry about from anyone at the party? Other peoples disapproval of our generosity is nothing to be worried about. If we are truly open about the calling that God has placed before us and are completing that task while encouraging others and serving out of humility then we can be assured thru faith that Jesus stands with us. Jesus does not stand with us solely to excuse our every action. Jesus’ time that he is referring to in this passage is his future ascension to sit at the right hand of God. In this role he forgives and reconciles us to God, which allows us the grow and change into the people that we have always been intended by God to become. This is his only goal and his human nature is seen thru his impatient response to his mother.
