As a runner I have experienced several types of coaches. Different styles, different attitudes, but the goal was always winning.
One coach was very regimented and methodical. He had a plan and if you couldn’t do it, well then, you weren’t good enough. He came at individuals as part of the team and pushed to find their breaking point. When I look back he was trying to maximize the capacity regardless of the capability. The higher the breaking point the better at racing you would be in his eyes. Over time, fewer and fewer people where willing to run this style of training.
I had another coach who was personal. He looked at each individual as a way to better the team. He would run with you and find your strengths and weaknesses and build a plan to improve your performance. Once he found each individuals plan he would tie them all together with the same goal of winning at the end of the season. He was trying to maximize each person’s capability as they built capacity.
God is like the second coach, he is working with us and thru us for the purpose of grace towards all mankind. We each have our own individual strengths and he has laid out a plan for each of us to maximize our capability as our capacity is drawn more and more from his eternal perspective. He then ties us all together in his church so that we can achieve the goal, love.
God, thank you for your grace, speak to each of us as we search for your will in our lives.
