Every time I read this story, I am reminded that Ananias was not killed because he held back money. He was killed because he lied about it and wanted to give the perception that he was giving it all. Look at what Peter said in verse 4, "Didn't the field belong to you, and after you sold it wasn't the money at your disposal." It would be easy to think that because so many people were giving away their property, that the moral of this story is that we are supposed to give everything away to God (or the church) but that's not the point.

The point is not to withhold our things from God but give the impression we're not. God looks at the heart, he doesn't strike people dead for not emptying their wallet in the offering.
