The Incident That Marked Joshua's Life
This is the turning point in Joshua's life. In the next verse, 6:1, Joshua beings the battle of Jericho - after which he will be a household name in Israel forever. But God comes to him on the eve of that battle and checks on him. Joshua asks the angel if he is for Israel of Jericho and I love the answer the angel gives - NO! (NASB) or NEITHER (NIV). God came to see if Joshua was going to be a part of His story, not the other way around.
Andy Stanley said this at Catalyst 2009 while speaking about this passage - "Do you know what the significance of this moment is? This is huge. This is huge for you. This is huge for me. It was as if God was saying to Joshua, 'Joshua, I have not come to be a part of your story. I've not even come to be a part of the story of Israel. I've not even come to be a part of the story of what I'm doing through the nation of Israel. I've come to discover if you are willing to play a role in my story.' Because your response to that question will determine what kind of mark you make and more importantly whose mark you make."
