There is a motivating fear that was driving Peter that Jesus is addressing here. It is this: "I have to show that I am worth having around or there won't be room for me in the Father's house. I have to show what I have versus everyone else or there won't be room for me." Performance is not going to carry us through. Committment like we think is not going to carry us through. Remember Peter denied Him three times on the very night he said he would give his life for the Lord. It is going to be one thing that will carry us through, it is not what we do, but it is gazing on the slain lamb bearing the wrath of God for our sins, going into the grave and coming back and receiving us to Himself. It is the work of Christ, period. Most of us base our committment to God on how good or bad of week we had and whatever that is is what our state of acceptence is before God. The Father desires for us to start living out of the overflow of His committment to us. The yoke of dead religion is heavy, but there is an easy yoke that comes of abiding in His house. We try to beat ourselves into a room that we are already in. Let go of all the grand trophies of committment and submit to the cruxcification of Jesus Christ.
