After praying and affirming their faith together the disciples experienced the out flowing of the Holy Spirit for the first time. Jesus had told them that “the Helper” would be coming to work thru them to continue his ministry, but probably none of them had any idea what that meant. From this account we see a key fundamental of speaking in tongues – that it should be interpreted by others for the glory of God. The miracle was not that they spoke in tongues, but rather that they spoke in the tongues of those that needed to hear the message of Christ while they where in Jerusalem. This miracle reminds us of the focus that we should have on the one mission of Jesus. We can’t assume that we can do it all on our own as the people of Babel did, but rather through the in working of the Holy Spirit. Also, Peter gives the first Christian sermon and calls the crowd out of the “sick and stupid culture” and reminds us of the perspective that we should take from God’s promise to David.
As the body of Christ in the world today we should be looking to find those places where we can “speak” to the needs of people without compromising our fundamental truths. We are to reprioritize our goals and desires around the truth and hope of Jesus. After we have prayed and found the calling that God has placed in us we can “speak” into the lives of those whom we have been called to preach with authority and grace and impart the eternal perspective that God has shown us through the inner working of the Holy Spirit.
God, thank you for the Saints who have come before us and the example that they have lived by your grace so that we can learn to have a deeper relationship with you. Bring us to a place where we are one heart and soul speaking your truth. Amen.
