Where would we go?
So, this last Sunday I preached a pretty difficult message from Luke 9 (yip the whole chapter), and we have had an overwhelming response from people really trying to get to grips with a God who is sovereign and still good.
And that really was the point of the message. It is really hard to get to grips with this stuff. In fact, it can be downright infuriating, and frustrating and really confusing to be a follower of Jesus.
But as I reflected on this further this morning in the shower, which is where I do most of my theological musing, I was reminded of a great scripture in another difficult chapter, John 6. Here again, Jesus has spoken some words that people can’t really get to grips with, and in fact many decide on that day not to follow Him anymore. He then turns to the remaining disciples, and ask them why they haven’t left as well.
“You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.
Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.” - John 6:68-69
So when you are struggling to piece together your understanding of a good and sovereign God. Ask yourself two questions.
1. Where else would you go? What are your options? Atheism? Would that give you more peace, and would it provide any answers to your questions? Eg What do you do with suffering if it is all just random?
2. What do you think of Jesus? Just keep coming back to this. Peter didn’t have all the answers, but he had the one that mattered. You are the Holy one of God. And that is the most important thing.
