Luke 24:35 ESV

"...he was known to them in the breaking of bread."

Either Jesus' appearance had dramatically changed after his resurrection and glorification, or he deliberately cloaked the eyes of these two disciples from being able to recognize him. Regardless, they finally recognized him at table as they broke bread together.

The point I just made may not be the driving idea in this text (because Luke doesn't say so), but it is hard to overlook the fact that reclining at table was such an intimate act between Jews and it was during this act that Christ's identity was known. It was here that their hearts burned within them. It was here that they learned how the Messiah fulfilled ALL the Old Covenant.

And it's based on this Jewish tradition that the Lord instituted one of our sacred acts of worship - the Lord's Supper. And it's here that we are to proclaim the Lord's death until he comes, as Paul instructed the Corinthian believers. And it is here that our hearts can burn within us, as well, as did the hearts of the Emmaus disciples.
