Ruth 1:1 ASV

Naomi decided to return to Israel and told her daughter-in-laws to return to their own homeland too.

Ruth had such a love and acceptance of Naomi that she was willing to give up her hopes of security and children, and go with Naomi. Ruth said that Naomi's people would become her people and Naomi's God would become her God.

When Naomi returned to her homeland, she told the people about her hardships and told them to call her by the name Mara, which means bitter.

Like us today, when we go through a lot of hard times, we can become bitter. But remember God is in control and all these things are stepping stones to better times, as we will see in the rest of this book.
