Matthew 8:23-28 TNIV

This passage teaches us a lot about fear and trusting the Lord.
First the disciples find themselves on a boat with Jesus when a storm comes up. Jesus is so calm and unafraid during this storm that He sleeps through it. The disciples, however, feared for their life and so they woke Jesus up to save them. He points out there lack of faith and then He ordered the storm to stop. This is a powerful message of God's power! No matter what kind of storm we encounter, whether real or metaphorical, we should not be afraid because Jesus is with us and has the power to calm the storm.

I find it interesting that immediately after this storm experience, Jesus takes the disciples through an area famous for two demon-possessed men. The Bible says that "they were so violent that no one could pass that way". This was a notoriously dangerous part of town that everybody stayed away from. This is one of those dark back-alleys that your mother would tell you to avoid as a child. But Jesus brings His disciples right through that area... and notice how none of the disciples speak up this time! They've learned trust Jesus and not be afraid. Let us do the same!
