Heart of Darkness
Numbers 14:1-4 ASV and Numbers 14:10 ASV
The most privileged people in the history of the existence of man, was also the most wicked. The Hebrews who have seen their God tear asunder the Egyptians with Plagues that ultimately broke the Egyptians resolve to keep the Hebrews in captivity, and they also witnessed the mighty deliverance that God provided by parting the sea so that the Hebrews could cross safely. In addition to all these amazing things the Hebrews witnessed, God provided food and water for them as well.God had now brought them within eye shot of the promise land and the people complained against God after the report of the spies. They complained that the people were huge, even giants, and the land would swallow them up! Why would God bring us to this land to be slaughtered they cried, it would be better to die in Egypt then to die here.
It is appalling to me that the Hebrews saw these great miracles of God and that they still disbelieved that God would take care of them, provide for them, and fight for them. What is more appalling to me is that I see myself being one of the Hebrews, even worse! Since I have God's word, I can read about the fall of the Hebrews, so I am even more guilty if I remediate any of the Hebrews sins.
If the most privileged people in the world who saw the miracles of God can still complain and show disbelief in Him, then we are also susceptible of complaining and disbelieving in God now!
We are made of the same stuff as the Hebrew and we are corrupted by sin as they are. I call this depravity, "the Heart of Darkness." We all have it, and there is no escaping it!
I am grateful that I have Christ to talk to about this. I would go through utter depression if I did not have Christ in my life after reading about the depravity of the Hebrews.
Lord God,
I am convinced now more than ever that the Hebrews who saw your amazing miracles who still disbelieved You, that I would likewise disbelief You know matter what the miracle is. I want You to know God, that I don't need a miracle to believe in You. I just believe in You! but I ask that You would be patient and merciful to me, for I am made of the same stuff as the Hebrews who fell in their depravity. Be merciful O God, in Jesus Name, Amen!
