1 Corinthians 10

1  FOR I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, that our forefathers were all under and protected by the cloud [in which God’s Presence went before them], and every one of them passed safely through the [Red] Sea, 2  And each one of them [allowed himself also] to be baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea [they were thus brought under obligation to the Law, to Moses, and to the covenant, consecrated and set apart to the service of God];3  And all [of them] ate the same spiritual (supernaturally given) food, 4  And they all drank the same spiritual (supernaturally given) drink. For they drank from a spiritual Rock which followed them [produced by the sole power of God Himself without natural instrumentality], and the Rock was Christ. 5  Nevertheless, God was not pleased with the great majority of them, for they were overthrown and strewn down along [the ground] in the wilderness. 6  Now these things are examples (warnings and admonitions) for us not to desire or crave or covet or lust after evil and carnal things as they did. 7  Do not be worshipers of false gods as some of them were, as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink [the sacrifices offered to the golden calf at Horeb] and rose to sport (to dance and give way to jesting and hilarity). 8  We must not gratify evil desire and indulge in immorality as some of them did--and twenty-three thousand [suddenly] fell dead in a single day! 9  We should not tempt the Lord [try His patience, become a trial to Him, critically appraise Him, and exploit His goodness] as some of them did--and were killed by poisonous serpents; 10  Nor discontentedly complain as some of them did--and were put out of the way entirely by the destroyer (death). 11  Now these things befell them by way of a figure [as an example and warning to us]; they were written to admonish and fit us for right action by good instruction, we in whose days the ages have reached their climax (their consummation and concluding period).12  Therefore let anyone who thinks he stands [who feels sure that he has a steadfast mind and is standing firm], take heed lest he fall [into sin].13  For no temptation (no trial regarded as enticing to sin), [no matter how it comes or where it leads] has overtaken you and laid hold on you that is not common to man [that is, no temptation or trial has come to you that is beyond human resistance and that is not adjusted and adapted and belonging to human experience, and such as man can bear]. But God is faithful [to His Word and to His compassionate nature], and He [can be trusted] not to let you be tempted and tried and assayed beyond your ability and strength of resistance and power to endure, but with the temptation He will [always] also provide the way out (the means of escape to a landing place), that you may be capable and strong and powerful to bear up under it patiently.14  Therefore, my dearly beloved, shun (keep clear away from, avoid by flight if need be) any sort of idolatry (of loving or venerating anything more than God).15  I am speaking as to intelligent (sensible) men. Think over and make up your minds [for yourselves] about what I say. [I appeal to your reason and your discernment in these matters.]16  The cup of blessing [of wine at the Lord’s Supper] upon which we ask [God’s] blessing, does it not mean [that in drinking it] we participate in and share a fellowship (a communion) in the blood of Christ (the Messiah)? The bread which we break, does it not mean [that in eating it] we participate in and share a fellowship (a communion) in the body of Christ?17  For we [no matter how] numerous we are, are one body, because we all partake of the one Bread [the One Whom the communion bread represents].18  Consider those [physically] people of Israel. Are not those who eat the sacrifices partners of the altar [united in their worship of the same God]? 19  What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is [intrinsically changed by the fact and amounts to] anything or that an idol itself is a [living] thing?20  No, I am suggesting that what the pagans sacrifice they offer [in effect] to demons (to evil spiritual powers) and not to God [at all]. I do not want you to fellowship and be partners with diabolical spirits [by eating at their feasts]. 21  You cannot drink the Lord’s cup and the demons’ cup. You cannot partake of the Lord’s table and the demons’ table.22  Shall we thus provoke the Lord to jealousy and anger and indignation? Are we stronger than He [that we should defy Him]? 23  All things are legitimate [permissible--and we are free to do anything we please], but not all things are helpful (expedient, profitable, and wholesome). All things are legitimate, but not all things are constructive [to character] and edifying [to spiritual life].24  Let no one then seek his own good and advantage and profit, but [rather] each one of the other [let him seek the welfare of his neighbor].25  [As to meat offered to idols] eat anything that is sold in the meat market without raising any question or investigating on the grounds of conscientious scruples,26  For the [whole] earth is the Lord’s and everything that is in it. 27  In case one of the unbelievers invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is served to you without examining into its source because of conscientious scruples.28  But if someone tells you, This has been offered in sacrifice to an idol, do not eat it, out of consideration for the person who informed you, and for conscience’s sake--29  I mean for the sake of his conscience, not yours, [do not eat it]. For why should another man’s scruples apply to me and my liberty of action be determined by his conscience?30  If I partake [of my food] with thankfulness, why am I accused and spoken evil of because of that for which I give thanks?31  So then, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you may do, do all for the honor and glory of God.32  Do not let yourselves be [hindrances by giving] an offense to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God [do not lead others into sin by your mode of life];33  Just as I myself strive to please [to accommodate myself to the opinions, desires, and interests of others, adapting myself to] all men in everything I do, not aiming at or considering my own profit and advantage, but that of the many in order that they may be saved.

고린도전서 10

1 형제 여러분, 여러분은 옛날 우리 조상들이 광야에서 겪은 일을 잊어서는 안 되겠습니다. 모세 때에 우리 조상들은 모두 구름의 인 도를 받아 홍해를 건넜습니다.

2 그들은 모두 모세를 따라 구름과 바다 가운데서 2세례를 받았고

3 똑같이 신령한 양식을 먹었으며

4 똑같이 신령한 물을 마셨습니다. 그들은 이 물을 신령한 바위에서 마셨는데 그 바위는 그들과 함께하셨던 그리스도였습니다.

5 그러나 하나님께서 그들 대부분을 기쁘게 여기지 않으셨으므로 그들은 광야에서 멸망을 받았습니다.

6 이런 일은 우리에게 거울이 되어 우리도 그들처럼 악을 좋아해서는 안 된다는 것을 경고해 주고 있습니다.

7 그들 가운데 어떤 사람들처럼 여러분은 우상을 숭배하지 마십시오. 성경에도 3“백성이 앉아서 먹고 마시고 일어나 난잡하게 뛰놀았다”라고 기록되어 있습니다.

8 또 그들 가운데 어떤 사람들은 간음하다가 하루에 23,000명이나 죽었습니다. 우리는 그들처럼 간음하지 맙시다.

9 그들 가운데 어떤 사람들은 4주님을 시험하다가 뱀에게 물려 죽었습니다. 우리는 그들처럼 주님을 시험하지 맙시다.

10 그들 가운데 어떤 사람들은 불평하다가 하나님의 천사에게 멸망당하였습니다. 우리는 그들처럼 불평하지 맙시다.

11 그들이 당한 이런 일들은 다른 사람들에게 본보기가 되었으며 세상 끝날을 눈 앞에 둔 우리에게 하나의 경고로서 기록되었습니다.

12 그러므로 선 줄로 생각하는 사람은 넘어질까 조심하십시오.

13 여러분이 당한 시험은 모든 사람들이 다 당하는 시험입니다. 하나님은 신실하신 분이시므로 여러분이 감당할 수 없는 시험당하는 것을 허락하지 않으시고 여러분이 시험을 당할 때에 피할 길을 마련해 주셔서 감당할 수 있게 하실 것입니다.

우상 숭배에 대한 경고

14 사랑하는 여러분, 그러므로 우상 숭배하는 일을 피하십시오.

15 내가 지각 있는 사람들에게 말합니다. 내가 하는 말을 스스로 판단해 보십시오.

16 우리가 감사하며 받는 축복의 잔은 그리스도의 피에 참여하는 것이 아닙니까? 또 우리가 떼는 빵은 그리스도의 몸에 참여하는 것이 아닙니까?

17 빵이 하나인데 우리가 다 그 빵을 함께 나눠 먹으므로 우리 많은 사람들은 한몸이 된 것입니다.

18 이스라엘 사람들을 보십시오. 제물을 먹는 사람들이 제단에 참여하지 않습니까?

19 그렇다면 우상의 제물이나 우상은 아무것도 아니지 않습니까?

20 그러나 이방인들이 제사하는 것은 귀신에게 하는 것이지 하나님에게 하는 것이 아닙니다. 나는 여러분이 귀신들과 사귀는 것을 원치 않습니다.

21 주님의 잔을 마시는 여러분이 귀신들의 잔을 마실 수는 없으며 주님의 식탁에 참여하는 여러분이 귀신들의 식탁에 참여할 수는 없습니다.

22 우리가 주님을 5노엽게 해서야 되겠습니까? 우리가 주님보다 강하단 말입니까?

23 무엇이든 할 수 있는 자유가 있다고 해서 그것이 다 유익한 것이 아니며 또 그것이 다 덕을 세우는 것도 아닙니다.

24 누구든지 자기 유익을 생각하지 말고 남의 유익을 생각해야 합니다.

25 시장에서 파는 고기는 무엇이든 양심에 거리낌없이 먹어도 됩니다.

26 이것은 땅과 그 안에 있는 모든 것이 다 주님의 것이기 때문입니다.

27 여러분이 불신자의 초대를 받고 가거든 차려 주는 것은 무엇이든지 양심에 거리낌없이 먹으십시오.

28 그러나 누가 여러분에게 그 음식이 우상에게 바쳐졌던 것이라고 하거든 말한 사람과 양심을 위해 먹지 마십시오.

29 내가 말하는 양심은 여러분의 양심이 아니라 다른 사람의 양심입니다. 내 자유가 남의 양심으로 판단을 받아야 할 이유가 무엇입니까?

30 감사하고 먹으면서 왜 내가 감사하는 그 음식 때문에 남의 비난을 받아야 합니까?

31 그러므로 여러분은 먹든지 마시든지 무엇을 하든지 모든 것을 하나님의 영광을 위해 하십시오.

32 유대인에게나 이방인에게나 하나님의 교회에 여러분은 거치는 돌이 되지 마십시오.

33 여러분도 나처럼 매사에 모든 사람을 기쁘게 하도록 노력하십시오. 나는 내 자신의 유익을 생각하지 않고 많은 사람들의 유익을 생각하여 그들이 구원을 얻도록 애쓰고 있습니다.
