1 Samuel 12

1 And Samuel said unto all Israel, Behold, I have hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and have made a king over you.2 And now, behold, the king walketh before you; and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my youth unto this day.3 Here I am: witness against me before Jehovah, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I taken a ransom to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.4 And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken aught of any man’s hand.5 And he said unto them, Jehovah is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found aught in my hand. And they said, He is witness.

6 And Samuel said unto the people, It is Jehovah that appointed Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.7 Now therefore stand still, that I may plead with you before Jehovah concerning all the righteous acts of Jehovah, which he did to you and to your fathers.8 When Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers cried unto Jehovah, then Jehovah sent Moses and Aaron, who brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and made them to dwell in this place.9 But they forgat Jehovah their God; and he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab; and they fought against them.10 And they cried unto Jehovah, and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken Jehovah, and have served the Baalim and the Ashtaroth: but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.11 And Jehovah sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side; and ye dwelt in safety.12 And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said unto me, Nay, but a king shall reign over us; when Jehovah your God was your king.13 Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have asked for: and, behold, Jehovah hath set a king over you.14 If ye will fear Jehovah, and serve him, and hearken unto his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of Jehovah, and both ye and also the king that reigneth over you be followers of Jehovah your God, well:15 but if ye will not hearken unto the voice of Jehovah, but rebel against the commandment of Jehovah, then will the hand of Jehovah be against you, as it was against your fathers.16 Now therefore stand still and see this great thing, which Jehovah will do before your eyes.17 Is it not wheat harvest to-day? I will call unto Jehovah, that he may send thunder and rain; and ye shall know and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done in the sight of Jehovah, in asking you a king.18 So Samuel called unto Jehovah; and Jehovah sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared Jehovah and Samuel.

19 And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto Jehovah thy God, that we die not; for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.20 And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not; ye have indeed done all this evil; yet turn not aside from following Jehovah, but serve Jehovah with all your heart:21 and turn ye not aside; for then would ye go after vain things which cannot profit nor deliver, for they are vain.22 For Jehovah will not forsake his people for his great name’s sake, because it hath pleased Jehovah to make you a people unto himself.23 Moreover as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against Jehovah in ceasing to pray for you: but I will instruct you in the good and the right way.24 Only fear Jehovah, and serve him in truth with all your heart; for consider how great things he hath done for you.25 But if ye shall still do wickedly, ye shall be consumed, both ye and your king.

사무엘의 고별사

1 그때 사무엘이 백성들에게 다시 말하였다. “나는 여러분의 요구대로 여러분에게 왕을 세워 주었습니다.

2 보십시오. 지금 왕은 여러분 앞에 있습니다. 이제 나는 늙어 백발이 되었고 내 아들들은 여러분과 함께 있습니다. 나는 어릴 때부터 지금까지 여러분의 지도자로 일해 왔습니다.

3 지금 내가 여호와 앞과 그의 택한 왕 앞에 섰으니 내가 잘못한 것이 있으면 말해 보십시오. 내가 누구의 소나 나귀를 뺏은 일이 있습니까? 여러분을 속이거나 못 살게 군 일이 있습니까? 뇌물을 받은 적이 있습니까? 내가 잘못한 것이 있으면 무엇이든지 말하십시오. 그러면 모든 것을 갚아 드리겠습니다.”

4 그러자 백성들이 대답하였다. “당신은 우리를 속이거나 못 살게 군 일이 없으며 단 한 번도 뇌물을 받은 일이 없습니다.”

5 “여러분이 내게서 아무 죄도 찾아내지 못한 이 일에 대해서 여호와와 그분의 택한 왕이 증인입니다.” “그렇습니다. 여호와께서 우리의 증인이 되셨습니다.”

6 그러자 사무엘이 백성들에게 이렇게 말하였다. “모세와 아론을 세우시고 여러분의 조상들을 이집트에서 인도해 내신 분은 바로 여호와이십니다.

7 이제 여러분은 여기 조용히 서 계십시오. 여호와께서 여러분과 여러분의 조상들을 위해 행하신 모든 선한 일에 대하여 내가 여호와 앞에서 여러분과 하나하나 따져가며 말씀드리겠습니다.

8 여러분의 조상들이 이집트에서 도와 달라고 여호와께 부르짖자 여호와께서는 모세와 아론을 보내 그들을 이 땅으로 인도해 내셨습니다.

9 그러나 그들은 곧 그들의 하나님 여호와를 잊어버렸습니다. 그래서 여호와께서는 하솔 왕의 군대 총사령관 시스라와 블레셋 사람과 모압 왕에게 그들을 넘겨 주셨습니다.

10 그때 백성들은 다시 여호와께 부르짖으며 ‘우리가 여호와를 버리고 이방 우상 바알과 아스다롯을 섬겨 범죄하였습니다. 이제 우리를 원수들의 손에서 구해 주소서. 그러면 우리가 당신을 섬기겠습니다’ 하고 애원하였습니다.

11 그래서 여호와께서는 기드온과 바락과 입다와 나 사무엘을 보내 여러분을 원수들의 손에서 구출하여 안전하게 살 수 있도록 해 주셨습니다.

12 그러나 여러분은 암몬 왕 나하스를 두려워하여 여호와 하나님이 여러분의 왕인데도 불구하고 나에게 와서 여러분을 다스릴 왕을 세워 달라고 요구하였습니다.

13 보십시오. 이제 여러분이 택한 왕이 여기 있습니다. 여러분이 왕을 요구하였으므로 여호와께서 여러분의 요구를 들어주셨습니다.

14 만일 여러분이 여호와를 두려운 마음으로 섬기고 그분이 명령하신 것을 거역하지 않고 그대로 순종하며 또 여러분과 여러분의 왕이 여러분의 하나님 여호와를 따르면 모든 일이 순조로울 것입니다.

15 그러나 만일 여러분이 여호와의 명령을 거역하고 순종하지 않으면 그 때는 여호와께서 여러분의 조상을 벌하신 것처럼 여러분을 무섭게 벌하실 것입니다.

16 이제 여러분은 여호와께서 행하시는 놀라운 일을 지켜 보십시오.

17 여러분도 알겠지만 밀을 추수하는 이맘때는 비 오는 계절이 아닙니다. 그러나 내가 기도하면 여호와께서 우레와 비를 보내실 것입니다. 이제 여러분은 왕을 요구한 그 죄가 얼마나 크다는 것을 알게 될 것입니다.”

18 그러고서 사무엘이 기도하자 여호와께서 우레와 비를 보내셨다. 그러자 모든 백성이 이것을 보고 여호와와 사무엘을 몹시 두려워하며

19 사무엘에게 이렇게 말하였다. “우리를 위해서 당신의 하나님 여호와께 기도하여 제발 우리가 죽지 않게 해 주십시오. 우리는 우리가 지은 모든 죄 외에도 왕을 요구하여 또 하나의 다른 죄를 범했습니다.”

20 그러자 사무엘은 “두려워하지 마십시오” 하고 백성들을 안심시키며 다시 말을 이었다. “여러분이 지금까지는 그런 악한 짓을 하였으나 이제는 여호와를 떠나지 말고 그분을 진심으로 섬기십시오.

21 여러분은 거짓 신들을 좇아서는 안 됩니다. 그들은 무익하므로 여러분을 도와줄 수도 없고 구원할 수도 없습니다.

22 여호와께서는 여러분을 자기 백성으로 삼으신 것을 기뻐하시기 때문에 그분의 위대하신 이름을 생각해서도 여러분을 버리지 않으실 것입니다.

23 그리고 나는 여러분을 위해 기도하는 일을 중단함으로 여호와께 범죄하지 않을 것이며 계속 선하고 옳은 것을 여러분에게 가르칠 것입니다.

24 여러분은 여호와를 두려워하고 마음을 다하여 진심으로 그분을 섬기십시오. 그리고 그분이 여러분을 위해 행하신 그 모든 놀라운 일들도 잊어서는 안 됩니다.

25 그러나 만일 여러분이 계속 죄를 범하면 여러분과 여러분의 왕이 다 멸망할 것입니다.”
