1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples.2 Now Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus oft-times resorted thither with his disciples.3 Judas then, having received the band of soldiers, and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.4 Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were coming upon him, went forth, and saith unto them, Whom seek ye?5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.6 When therefore he said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.7 Again therefore he asked them, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.8 Jesus answered, I told you that I am he; if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:9 that the word might be fulfilled which he spake, Of those whom thou hast given me I lost not one.10 Simon Peter therefore having a sword drew it, and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. Now the servant’s name was Malchus.11 Jesus therefore said unto Peter, Put up the sword into the sheath: the cup which the Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?12 So the band and the chief captain, and the officers of the Jews, seized Jesus and bound him,13 and led him to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.14 Now Caiaphas was he that gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known unto the high priest, and entered in with Jesus into the court of the high priest;16 but Peter was standing at the door without. So the other disciple, who was known unto the high priest, went out and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.17 The maid therefore that kept the door saith unto Peter, Art thou also one of this man’s disciples? He saith, I am not.18 Now the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals; for it was cold; and they were warming themselves: and Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.19 The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his teaching.20 Jesus answered him, I have spoken openly to the world; I ever taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and in secret spake I nothing.21 Why askest thou me? Ask them that have heard me, what I spake unto them: behold, these know the things which I said.22 And when he had said this, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?24 Annas therefore sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore unto him, Art thou also one of his disciples? He denied, and said, I am not.26 One of the servants of the high priest, being a kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?27 Peter therefore denied again: and straightway the cock crew.28 They lead Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium: and it was early; and they themselves entered not into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the passover.29 Pilate therefore went out unto them, and saith, What accusation bring ye against this man?30 They answered and said unto him, If this man were not an evildoer, we should not have delivered him up unto thee.31 Pilate therefore said unto them, Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law. The Jews said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:32 that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying by what manner of death he should die.33 Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?34 Jesus answered, Sayest thou this of thyself, or did others tell it thee concerning me?35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end have I been born, and to this end am I come into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find no crime in him.39 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?40 They cried out therefore again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.)

Die Gefangennahme Jesu

1 Danach verließ Jesus mit seinen Jüngern die Stadt. Sie überquerten den Kidronbach tund gingen in einen Garten, der sich auf der anderen Seite des Tals befand.
2 Jesus war oft zusammen mit seinen Jüngern dort gewesen; deshalb kannte auch Judas, der Verräter t, diesen Ort.3 Jetzt kam er dorthin, begleitet von Soldaten der römischen Besatzungstruppe tund von den Männern der Tempelwache t, die ihm die führenden Priester und die Pharisäer zur Verfügung gestellt hatten.Sie waren bewaffnet und trugen Laternen und Fackeln.
4 Jesus wusste genau, was ihm bevorstand. Er ging ihnen bis vor den Eingang des Gartens entgegen tund fragte sie: »Wen sucht ihr?«5 Judas, der Verräter, stand dabei. »Jesus von Nazaret«, antworteten sie. »Ich bin es«, erklärte Jesus.6 Als er zu ihnen sagte: »Ich bin es«, wichen sie zurück und fielen zu Boden.7 Jesus fragte sie noch einmal: »Wen sucht ihr?« - »Jesus von Nazaret«, erwiderten sie.8 »Ich habe euch doch gesagt, dass ich es bin«, sagte Jesus. »Wenn ich der bin, den ihr sucht, dann lasst die anderen hier gehen.«9 So sollte sich Jesu eigenes Wort erfüllen: »Von denen, die du mir gegeben hast, habe ich keinen verloren gehen lassen.« t
10 Simon Petrus hatte ein Schwert bei sich. Er zog es, ging damit auf den Diener des Hohenpriesters los, einen Mann namens Malchus, und schlug ihm das rechte Ohr ab.11 Da sagte Jesus zu Petrus: »Steck das Schwert weg! Soll ich den ´bitteren` Kelch, den mir der Vater gegeben hat, etwa nicht trinken?«

Jesus vor Hannas

12 Die römischen Soldaten tunter der Führung ihres Offiziers und die Männer der Tempelwache, die von den Juden geschickt worden waren, tnahmen Jesus nun fest. Sie fesselten ihn13 und brachten ihn als Erstes zu Hannas. Hannas war der Schwiegervater von Kajafas, der in jenem Jahr Hoherpriester war.14 Kajafas war es gewesen, der den Juden klar gemacht hatte, dass es in ihrem Interesse sei, wenn ein Mensch für das Volk stirbt. t

Petrus verleugnet Jesus

15 Simon Petrus und ein anderer Jünger folgten Jesus, ´als er abgeführt wurde`. Dieser andere Jünger war mit dem Hohenpriester bekannt und konnte deshalb bis in den Innenhof des hohepriesterlichen Palastes mitgehen.16 Petrus aber blieb draußen vor dem Tor stehen. Da kam der andere Jünger, der Bekannte des Hohenpriesters, wieder zurück, redete mit der Pförtnerin und nahm dann Petrus mit hinein.
17 Die Pförtnerin fragte Petrus: »Bist du nicht tauch einer von den Jüngern dieses Mannes?« - »Nein«, antwortete Petrus, »das bin ich nicht.«
18 Die Diener ´des hohepriesterlichen Hauses` und die Männer der Tempelwache thatten ein Kohlenfeuer angezündet, weil es kalt war; sie standen um das Feuer herum und wärmten sich. Petrus stellte sich zu ihnen und wärmte sich ebenfalls.

Das Verhör vor dem Hohenpriester

19 Inzwischen befragte der Hohepriester tJesus über seine Jünger und über seine Lehre.20 Jesus erklärte: »Ich habe immer frei und offen geredet und so, dass alle Welt es hören konnte. Ich habe nie im Geheimen gelehrt, sondern immer in den Synagogen und im Tempel, wo alle Juden zusammenkommen.21 Warum fragst du mich also? Frag die, die mich gehört haben t; sie wissen, was ich gesagt habe.«
22 Empört über diese Worte, schlug ihn einer der Gerichtsdiener, die dabeistanden t, ins Gesicht und sagte: »Wie kannst du es wagen, dem Hohenpriester so eine Antwort zu geben?«23 Jesus entgegnete: »Wenn an dem, was ich gesagt habe, etwas Unrechtes war, dann beweise es. Wenn ich aber nichts Unrechtes gesagt habe, warum behandelst du mich so? t«
24 Hannas ließ Jesus daraufhin gefesselt vor den Hohenpriester Kajafas bringen.

Petrus verleugnet Jesus noch einmal

25 Simon Petrus stand immer noch beim Feuer und wärmte sich. Da wurde er gefragt: »Bist du nicht auch einer von seinen Jüngern?« Petrus stritt es ab. »Ich bin es nicht«, sagte er.26 Einer der Diener des Hohenpriesters, ein Verwandter des Mannes, dem Petrus das Ohr abgeschlagen hatte, sagte: »Habe ich dich nicht dort im Garten bei ihm gesehen?«27 Wieder stritt Petrus ab, ´etwas mit Jesus zu tun zu haben`.Im selben Augenblick krähte ein Hahn.

Jesus vor Pilatus

28 Die, die Jesus verhört hatten, brachten ihn nun vom ´Haus des` Kajafas zum Prätorium, ´dem Amtssitz des römischen Gouverneurs`; es war jetzt früh am Morgen. Sie selbst betraten das Gebäude nicht, um die Reinheitsvorschriften nicht zu verletzen t; sie hätten sonst nicht am Passafest teilnehmen können t.29 Deshalb kam Pilatus zu ihnen heraus. »Was für eine Anklage erhebt ihr gegen diesen Mann?«, fragte er.30 Sie erwiderten: »Wenn er kein Verbrecher wäre, hätten wir ihn nicht zu dir gebracht.«31 Da sagte Pilatus: »Nehmt doch ihr ihn und richtet ihn nach eurem Gesetz!« Die Juden entgegneten: »Wir haben nicht das Recht, jemand hinzurichten.«32 So sollte sich das Wort erfüllen, mit dem Jesus angedeutet hatte, auf welche Weise er sterben werde. t
33 Pilatus ging ins Prätorium zurück und ließ Jesus vorführen. »Bist du der König der Juden?«, fragte er ihn.34 Jesus erwiderte: »Bist du selbst auf diesen Gedanken gekommen, oder haben andere dir das über mich gesagt?« -35 »Bin ich etwa ein Jude?«, gab Pilatus zurück. »Dein eigenes Volk und die führenden Priester haben dich mir übergeben. Was hast du getan?«36 Jesus antwortete: »Das Reich, dessen König ich bin, tist nicht von dieser Welt. Wäre mein Reich von dieser Welt, dann hätten meine Diener für mich gekämpft, damit ich nicht den Juden in die Hände falle t. Nun ist aber mein Reich nicht von dieser Erde.«37 Da sagte Pilatus zu ihm: »Dann bist du also tatsächlich ein König?« Jesus erwiderte: »Du hast Recht t- ich bin ein König. Ich bin in die Welt gekommen, um für die Wahrheit Zeuge zu sein; dazu bin ich geboren. Jeder, der auf der Seite der Wahrheit steht t, hört auf meine Stimme.« -38 »Wahrheit?«, sagte Pilatus zu ihm. »Was ist Wahrheit?«
Damit brach Pilatus das Verhör ab und ging twieder zu den Juden hinaus. »Ich kann keine Schuld an ihm finden«, erklärte er.

Die Verurteilung Jesu

39 »Nun habt ihr ja nach eurem Brauch Anspruch darauf t, dass ich euch am Passafest einen Gefangenen freigebe. Wollt ihr, dass ich euch den König der Juden freigebe?« -40 »Nein, den nicht!«, schrien sie zurück. »Wir wollen Barabbas!« Dieser Barabbas war ein Verbrecher t.
