Romans 1
1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,2 which he promised afore through his prophets in the holy scriptures,3 concerning his Son, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh,4 who was declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead; even Jesus Christ our Lord,5 through whom we received grace and apostleship, unto obedience of faith among all the nations, for his name’s sake;6 among whom are ye also called to be Jesus Christ’s:7 To all that are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is proclaimed throughout the whole world.9 For God is my witness, whom I serve in my spirit in the gospel of his Son, how unceasingly I make mention of you, always in my prayers10 making request, if by any means now at length I may be prospered by the will of God to come unto you.11 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;12 that is, that I with you may be comforted in you, each of us by the other’s faith, both yours and mine.13 And I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you (and was hindered hitherto), that I might have some fruit in you also, even as in the rest of the Gentiles.14 I am debtor both to Greeks and to Barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish.15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you also that are in Rome.16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.17 For therein is revealed a righteousness of God from faith unto faith: as it is written, But the righteous shall live by faith.18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hinder the truth in unrighteousness;19 because that which is known of God is manifest in them; for God manifested it unto them.20 For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity; that they may be without excuse:21 because that, knowing God, they glorified him not as God, neither gave thanks; but became vain in their reasonings, and their senseless heart was darkened.22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things.24 Wherefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts unto uncleanness, that their bodies should be dishonored among themselves:25 for that they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile passions: for their women changed the natural use into that which is against nature:27 and likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another, men with men working unseemliness, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was due.28 And even as they refused to have God in their knowledge, God gave them up unto a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not fitting;29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malignity; whisperers,30 backbiters, hateful to God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,31 without understanding, covenant-breakers, without natural affection, unmerciful:32 who, knowing the ordinance of God, that they that practise such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but also consent with them that practise them.

1 Paulus, ein Knecht Jesu Christ, berufen zum Apostel und auserkoren, um Gottes Frohe Botschaft zu verkünden. —2 Die hat Gott in den heiligen Schriftent durch seine Propheten zuvor verheißen3 über seinen Sohn. Der ist dem Fleisch nacht aus Davids Geschlecht hervorgegangen,4 nach dem Geist der Heiligkeitt aber ist er durch seine Auferstehung von den Toten zu der Machtfülle des Sohnes Gottes erhoben worden.t5 Durch ihn, unseren Herrn Jesus Christus, haben wir die Gnadengabe des Apostelamtes empfangen, um zu seines Namens Ehre unter allen Völkern solche zu sammeln, die dem Glauben gehorsam werden.6 Inmitten dieser Völkerwelt seid auch ihr von Jesus Christus berufen. —7 Euch allen, als Geliebten Gottes und berufenen Heiligent in Rom, entbiete ich meinen Gruß. Gnade und Friede von Gott, unserem Vater, und dem Herrn Jesus Christus!8 Besonders danke ich meinem Gott durch Jesus Christus für euch alle, daß von euerm Glauben in der ganzen Welt die Rede ist.9 Denn Gott, dem ich in meinem Geist diene, indem ich die Frohe Botschaft seines Sohnes verkündige, — der ist mein Zeuge, wie unablässig ich euer gedenke.10 Stets flehe ich in meinen Gebeten zu Gott, er möge mir, wenn es sein Wille ist, nun endlich die Wege bahnen, daß ich zu euch kommen könne.11 Denn mich verlangt danach, euch zu sehen, um euch diese und jene geistliche Gabe zu eurer Stärkung mitzuteilen,12 oder richtiger gesagt: wir — ihr und ich — wollen uns, wenn ich bei euch bin, durch unseren Glauben gegenseitig ermuntern.13 Es drängt mich, euch zu sagen, Brüder, daß ich mir schon oft vorgenommen habe, euch zu besuchen. Bis jetzt aber bin ich immer wieder daran gehindert worden. Denn auch unter euch möchte ich ebenso wie in den Ländern anderer Völker etwas Frucht einsammeln.14 Griechen und Nichtgriechen, Gebildeten und Ungebildeten bin ich ja zu dienen verpflichtet.15 Daher bin ich, soviel an mir liegt, gern bereit, auch euch in Rom die Frohe Botschaft zu verkünden.16 Wahrlich, ich schäme mich der Frohen Botschaft nicht. Sie ist ja eine Gotteskraft, die allen, die da glauben, Rettung bringt: zuerst den Juden, dann auch den Griechen.t17 Denn Gottes Gerechtigkeitt wird darint offenbar: sie kommt aus Glauben, und sie führt zum Glauben, wie geschrieben steht: Der Gerechte wird durch den Glauben das Leben erlangen.t18 Dennt Gottes Zorn wird fort und fort vom Himmel offenbar über alle Gottlosigkeit und Ungerechtigkeit solcher Menschen, die die Wahrheit durch Ungerechtigkeit zu unterdrücken suchen.19 Dennt was man von Gott erkennen kann, das ist unter ihnen wohlbekannt. Gott selbst hat es ihnen kundgemacht.20 Sein unsichtbares Wesen — seine ewige Macht und göttliche Größe — läßt sich ja seit der Erschaffung der Welt in seinen Werken deutlich wahrnehmen. Darum sind die Menschen auch ohne Entschuldigung,21 wenn sie trotz ihrer Erkenntnis Gottes ihm nicht als Gott Ehre und Dank dargebracht haben, sondern auf nichtige Gedanken verfallen und mit ihrem unverständigen Herzen in Finsternis geraten sind.22 In ihrem Weisheitsstolz sind sie zu Narren geworden:23 die Herrlichkeit des unvergänglichen Gottes haben sie vertauscht mit armseligen Bildern von vergänglichen Menschen, Vögeln, vierfüßigen Tieren und kriechendem Gewürm.t24 Deshalb hat sie Gott in den bösen Begierden ihrer Herzen der Unreinigkeit preisgegeben, daß sie ihre eigenen Leiber schändeten,25 weil sie die Wahrheit Gottest mit der Lüget vertauscht und dem Geschöpf mehr Verehrung und Dienst erwiesen haben als dem Schöpfer, der da gepriesen sei in Ewigkeit. Amen.26 Darum hat sie Gott schändlichen Leidenschaften preisgegeben. Ihre Weiber haben statt des natürlichen Geschlechtsverkehrs widernatürlichen Umgang gepflogen.27 Ebenso haben die Männer den natürlichen Verkehr mit dem Weib aufgegeben und sind in ihrer Begierde gegeneinander entbrannt: Männer haben mit Männern Unzucht getrieben und die gebührende Strafe für ihre Verirrung an ihrem eigenen Leib empfangen.t28 Weil ihnen nichts daran lag, die Erkenntnis Gottes festzuhalten, hat sie Gott einer verwerflichen Sinnesweise preisgegeben, so daß sie schmähliche Dinge treiben.29 Sie sind erfüllt mit aller Ungerechtigkeit, Bosheit, Habsucht und Schlechtigkeit. Sie sind voller Neid, Mord, Streit, Trug und Tücke.30 Sie verleumden heimlich und öffentlich. Sie sind gottlose Frevler, übermütige Prahler, erfinderisch im Bösen. Sie sind den Eltern ungehorsam,31 sie sind unverständig, wortbrüchig, lieblos und unbarmherzig.32 Sie wissen ganz genau, daß nach dem Gesetz Gottes alle solche Frevler den Tod verdienen. Trotzdem aber begnügen sie sich nicht damit, selbst dergleichen Sünden zu begehen; nein, sie rühmen auch noch ganz offen die anderen, die solche schändlichen Dinge treiben.
