God as a Magic Genie
Many have taken this verse to mean that God is supposed to grant every wish and desire that we have. This is just too simplistic of an understanding of Scripture.
Prayer is about relationship.
Prayer is not about getting what we want.
Prayer is about finding what it is that God may want in any and every situation.
Prayer is a submission to God's will over our own.
God knows when we pray prayers that are strictly selfish in origin. We want a relief from pain and suffering. We want a better job. We want less annoying people surrounding us.
Prayer is greater than all of that. It is deeper. It is based on relationship. It is based on submission to the things that God wants for us, since he knows what is best in any and every situation.
Prayer is a trusting of God for salvation. That is why we must believe when we pray.
God is not a genie, he is much more than that. And we are much more than mere beggars. We are his children.
