In a time of Judgement
When you consider the world Noah lived in, it becomes all the more amazing that he was able to walk with God (6:8-9). Humanity’s constant evil inventions had created an unimaginably difficult environment to live in. In this context Noah by faith began to build the ark as a visible warning for all to see.
We have much to learn from Noah. Jesus warned that as it was in the days of Noah it would also be in the last days. There are many parallels between his time and ours. If we don’t take seriously what it requires to “walk with God” in an ungodly age, we will most likely become one of its casualties. To walk with God takes serious effort. It means seeking to be nourished, alone with Him and His Word, so we can overcome the influences of a world in unleashed rebellion against Him. In days such as ours, it is vital that we set aside time and focus our thinking, emotions, and desires on walking with God in prayer and meditation. Without this we will not grow deeper into the soil of God that produces the spiritual vitality necessary to walk with Him while living in these wicked days.
The account of Noah and his family being saved from the judgment of the flood is a vivid portrait of the salvation we find in Jesus Christ today. In Noah’s time the world had brought itself to an unparalleled level of wickedness. To allow this to continue would have been impossible for God. So through Noah’s preaching and building of the Ark he called humanity to return to God. Even when judgment is well deserved God will always offer a way for judgment to pass over us individually or as a society.
In the same fashion, through men and women like Noah in our own day, God sends warnings of the just penalties for sin and the foretold judgment described in the book of Revelation.
Jesus warned us that just as it was in the days of Noah, it would also be in the days leading up to Christ’s return and our world’s judgment (Matt. 24:37). But as in Noah’s time, Jesus foretold we would be living as if there would never be any consequences, temporally or eternally for sin. Today we are to proclaim safety through Christ. Just as the Ark provided safety for Noah and his family, Christ has become the gift of God to shelter us from the just judgment that will end life on Earth as we know it. Christ has become the only source of refuge. Christ is the one answer to God’s perfect call for justice. All those who will not turn from sin to their Savior have chosen the judgment of Hell.
By God’s grace we are all offered the “Ark of Christ.” Our mocking rejection of His cross of salvation in our own time will fully justify the judgment that will one day fall upon our world. In the meantime may we each yield to God to bring the Gospel of Grace to our sphere of influence. Secondly, may we by prayer and finances enable others to be sent into our world as God sent His Son to be light in darkness and truth in a world of lies. God is ready at any moment to begin restoring the image of God within anyone if they will simply repent and turn to Christ.
