Our God is an Awesome God!

"Our God is an awesome God..", are the words to a very popular Christian song. What do you think about when you ponder the greatness and awesomeness of God? My thoughts always go to Mt. Sinai. For three days the children of Israel consecrated and prepared themselves to finally meet the God who had faithfully redeemed them. I try to imagine what was going through their minds and hearts. I think I only scratch the surface in my imagination and it still overwhelms me. What it must have been like to meet the source of power that brought about the plagues in Egypt; to see the God who caused the Red Sea to part so that they could walk on dry ground; to hear directly from the One who caused water to come from a rock that they might drink, and who caused manna and quail to faithfully come and feed them in the wilderness.

So God comes down to the mountain and things begin to happen. Creation begins to react. Thick clouds, thunder, lightning, heavenly trumpets begin to proclaim God's presence. And the people tremble. When was the last time you trembled in the presence of God? Do you too comfortably have Him fitting into your image so that He doesn't overwhelm you? Just stop for a minute and think about it. He cannot be figured out or understood. He is beyond all that we can imagine. He is utterly holy and all powerful. He is majestic. When He just speaks a word, the earth reacts. It is before this God that Moses brings the children of Israel out of the camp to meet. They tremble in holy fear as they move toward the mountain to meet their God.

This same God wants to meet you in His Word. I pray that, at times, even these devotions in a small way bring you to God's holy mountain and you are face to face with your God. It is OK to tremble, but don't be so fearful that you miss the point. Our God, as holy and fearful as He is, wants to be known. He wants to be with His children. That is why He sent His Son into the world. Jesus is God. He is the embodiment of the heart of God. His death and resurrection provide us the opportunity to stand before God and not perish.

Take a moment today (everyday) to be overwhelmed and awed in the presence of God.

Peace!

Tom
