Pride Comes Before a Fall
When God chose Saul to be King over Israel, there was some humility. He even questioned why God would choose him, being from the smallest and weakest tribe. We know God often chooses the least to show His power & glory.
Saul has made several mistakes along the way. He was compulsive in making the oath that none of his men eat til the Phillistines were defeated. He didn't seek God's will or ask for wisdom. Then making a burnt offering to the Lord was a clear & strict violation of the law. Only the priests were allowed and chosen to do this. But Saul's decisions were made in arrogance.
I found it interesting that when Samuel found & questioned Saul as to why he disobeyed God by taking the plunder from the battle w/the Phillistines - Saul answered that he was going to use the animals to offer sacrifices "to your Lord". This is the first indication to me that Saul was not a Christian. Being a Jew did not make one a Christian. They were living under the old testament law and none could followit to the letter. But God knew their hearts and He knew who followed Him faithfully. Saul could have been an incredible leader by submitting to God's will. But we see here the path he is choosing as he continues to think his way is better than God's way.
