Ex 19:19 - Moses & Elijah on the same mountain

Here we see God speaking to Moses in the thunder and lightning so as to awaken reverence in the hearts of all the Israelites who were watching - the mountain shook violently and fire & smoke surrounded the mountain - I'm sure it was quite and amazing site to see. This struck fear in the hearts of all the people, which was one of God's original goals - He was showing them that there are only certain people who can approach Him and only in certain ways, and if you attempted to draw close to God physically he would kill you.

Well, in 1 Kings 19:11-13 we see Elijah running from a woman named Jezebel that wanted to kill him - he was scared. Fear of this woman gripped his heart. So what did God do? Brought him all the way to the same mountain where He spoke to Moses! Elijah was very familiar with the story of Moses and how God spoke to Him, so I'm sure his expectation was to hear God in the same way. But when the mountain quaked and the thunder and lightning came God never said a word - He didn't speak to Elijah in the same way He spoke to Moses. Then, in a still small whisper God spoke! It floored Elijah. Why? Because fear of man gripped Elijah's heart and this mountain was the very spot where God established fear of Him! Elijah had is backwards - he needed to be fearing God and knowing His almighty power, but he was fearing Jezebel and her finite power.
This mountain was where God established Himself as a God whom you must stay away from and only approach Him a certain way, but when He whispered to Elijah He was drawing him close, revealing to Him that God was right there with Him and would watch over and protect Him. Elijah was ready to hear God in all the big stuff, but when God whispered He was so incredibly humbled that God would be willing to draw close to Him - He knew God was a God of distance, but God closed that distance with Elijah to show him that he had no business in fearing man.
Now, with Jesus, He has drawn us all close to Him! It's our responsibility to stay close! That's it, and when we do God will live and breathe and work through us!
