Lev 16:5 - Two Goats *

Two goats were used by Aaron here - one to be sacrificed as a sin offering so that the blood would cover over the sin committed by the people, and the other as a scapegoat to carry the burden of guilt away from the people. When the goat was sacrificed their sin was atoned for, but the guilt of it still remained. So Aaron had to find a man who was standing in a position of "readiness" (vs 21) to take the second goat out to the wilderness and release it. This was an OT picture of how it works for us today. Jesus was the sacrificial lamb and cleansed away all of our sins, but we still have this goat of guilt that we need to release. Based upon the sacrifice that was made for our sins we can be free from the guilt associated with it, but not until we release it. The devil doesn't want us to release it - he wants us to carry that goat around everywhere because goats are stubborn and if we have a stubborn goat with us everywhere we go then we can't accomplish all that God wants us to accomplish! Let the goat go and be free!
