Sacrifice

You can't help but notice the many types of sacrifice that are required when you read Leviticus. I admit that most of the time when I read it, I don't pay particular attention because it is not something we practice. And to be honest there have been times I have really wondered why it was important enough to be in the bible. I say this because I don't believe the old testament is just history. I believe that EVERYTHING in the bible is there for a reason. While I believe it is important to know history, I believe that this book can and does tell us something else important. Do I know all that it says. Nope - I get something new every time I open my bible. So this morning as I was reading about the sacrifices', I couldn't help but note that if I we were still sacrificing at the temple, there would not be enough animals to cover our sins as a nation, and for me personally. And I am just talking about the sin offerings. This of course does not cover the offerings for unintentional sins, the trespass offering where you must make restitution etc. As I read, it was hard to keep it clear just what I would need to remember just to make myself right before God. It was then that I realized the importance of this book to me personally. By outlining the requirements under the law, it gave me the a clear picture of just what Jesus's sacrifice did for me.

Imagine for a moment the weight of trying to remember everything you did that is sin. Every thought or action under scrutiny? I don't know but I do believe that we as humans tend to make light of our mistakes and are rarely as brutally honest as we need to be to make things right. That's not to say we are bad, I just believe that we tend to hide things from others but especially ourselves. This sacrificial system did not allow for that, but neither does the sacrifice Jesus made. Yes our sin is covered by the cross, but we still need to be mindful of our actions, we need to confess it and in order to do that, we need to be aware of it. The blood covered the sin then and Jesus's blood covers ours now but there was a requirement. The confession and the sin must be brought to the alter.
