Matt 8:5-13 - The Centurian

There's only one time in the NT where Jesus said, "Never before have I seen such great faith" and that was when He was approached by a Centurian who explained to Jesus that he was familiar with the authority Jesus had because he too carried authority over his troops - this Centurian was faithful in his position of authority over his troops and therefore he equated to Jesus this same faithfulness in His position of authority. The Centurian saw God as he saw himself, and this touched the heart of the Lord.

If God is hard and cruel then it's because you are hard and cruel. It's the same thing Cain went through - he brought a bad sacrifice and therefore God became to him like he was to God, a blessing-withholding kill-joy bent on punishing people. If Cain would have been faithful to bring God his best then he would have seen God as a faithful God who wants to give Cain His best.
How you see God determines the condition of your heart.
