Seek the Lord for guidance and don't rely on yourself, especially if you're a leader

Moses wrote a historical narrative about the period of wandering in the desert and the giving of the Law the second time before conquering Canaan. Moses asked the Lord for a replacement. Joshua, Moses' aide, was chosen. The Lord put the spiritual gift of leadership in Joshua (v. 18) and transferred leadership from Moses to him through the laying on of hands. Instead of speaking face to face with Joshua, The Lord would speak to Joshua and subsequent leaders through the priests via urim and thummim and other methods.

The Lord anointed and appointed Israel's leaders. They had Him as their king. Their human leader was to issue commands to the people. It was the leader's responsibility to seek the Lord for guidance prior to making decisions. Joshua failed to do this and was deceived into entering a treaty with the Gibeonites, but he learned from that mistake. We have the privilege of learning from his and other Israelite leaders' mistakes.

Before appointing leaders or accepting a leadership position, we must seek the Lord. He appoints leaders. Then decisions must be submitted to the Lord. He will guide us when we diligently seek His advice. When we listen to our own reasoning, things do not go as well as they ought.
