Oh the irony!
Jesus's accusers wouldn't enter the Roman Governor's headquarters because it would have made them ceremonially unclean. Here they are about to send the Christ to hang and die, and they are "concerned" with not observing God's law.
Before we laugh, though, we should be careful to examine our life and assess how many "laws" we're upholding, to the detriment of the things Christ has called us to do. (e.g.: "I never miss choir rehearsal"; but do your coworkers experience the love of God from you on a daily basis)
