Head Coverings in 1 Cor. 11

Apparently, a man having an uncovered head in worship was a societal sign of respect, much like today when a gentleman takes off his hat when entering a building. As far the women were concerned, a female in public in this time and place was considered to have "loose morals" or to be promiscuous (per NIV Study Bible notes) if they had their head uncovered, so for a woman to uncover her head in a corporate worship setting was seen to be associating herself with disgrace and sullying the reputations of Christ and those around her.

In that regards, this passage is time- and culture-specific, but contextually, we can bridge the gap between then and now by seeing what it has to teach us about honoring God, Christ, and each other.
