Solomon's shame
When I first read the account in 1Kings where Solomon builds a 'special' palace for one of his wives, the Egyptian princess, I thought it was an act motivated by love & maybe her class. Now I find that it was an act of shame.
He probably was able to mollify his conscience enough to take in other (numerous) foreign women who then turned his heart away from God.
When we excuse sin in our lives, our consciences gradually become seared till we drift very far away from the truth.
