What's in a name, right? Every time I read this passage in Revelation 19 I am in awe of the reverence for the many names of Jesus. It's going to be an incredible day when we are called by name by the King of kings. But what is my name compared to his. I have no glory of my own because it all belongs to him. My name is only a reminder of failure and shame.
A number of years ago I had made a wrong statement that we should drop the name Christian. I was speaking in the context of the shame some people have brought to that name. It has gotten to the point that people run away when we mention Christian; not out of conviction but out of distrust. There is a great deal of wrong things attached to it.
However I was wrong in wanting to drop the name. It is the name we have been given to bear and it is a privilege. Beyond privilege it is an honour to bear the name of Christ. Like anything else we put our hand on, we have tainted the name but a time is coming when it will be redeemed along with us. Then we will be glad we had such an honour. Until that time I will refuse to be ashamed of Jesus before man knowing he will refuse to be ashamed of me before the Father. Christian it was; Christian it is; Christian it will forever be. To God be the glory!
