In Chap 3, John baptized Jesus with humility, was privileged to hear the voice from heaven. Now in Chap 11, he was offended and doubted if Jesus was really the Christ.
Imagine all the thoughts that must have gone through John's head: 'If Jesus is really the Christ, He'll come deliver me and proclaim my innocence. Okay, even if he's not, as my cousin, he should rally relatives to protest to the King Herod. My own cousin pretends he's not aware I'm imprisoned. Some Christ!'
I am so often like that too. If God is really God, He wont let my boss get away with treating me shabbily, after all, I do my work as unto Him, with all diligence. If God is really God, my prayers would be answered tonight.
And so, we want to use God for our personal advantage. And when God will have none of that, because after all, HE is GOD and not a lap dog, we doubt Him!
Jesus had the perfect answer for John and for us: Look around you and you'll see all the proofs you need that God is God. Lives are being transformed, prayers are being answered, the world is still upheld by His mighty arm; His children are being fed, protected, preserved; Bodies are being healed. Yes HE IS STILL GOD.
And blest are those who are not offended in, or by Him.
