Head Count//Heart Check: Bible Breakdown on Numbers 1

Verse Breakdown:
1-3. God asks Moses to count the eligible soldiers among the people.
4-16. A leader from each tribe is chosen to help.
17-46. The number of men 20+ years counted AND named (but not here).
47-53. Levites left out of the count to focus on the Tabenacle
54. Just do it

Message:
603,550 is alot of heads to count and names to write down. Even considering that this may be less than a quarter of Isreal's total population, a half million fighting men seems like a strong number to me.

But whether the numbers are money in the bank or people on your side, God never wanted us to measure our strength by mere digits. In fact, I'm not sure as to 'why' God tells Moses to do this when it's a bad thing in later books and stories.

I guess it's good to have an accurate account for stewardship sake, but pride loves to find facts that justify it's existence.

We need to be careful because the numbers can lie! Whether they tell us we have nothing or say we are too big to fail, unless we found our strength and security in the infinite, there is no number that will insure eternity for us.

The numbers in my account tell me I have Nothing, but the Spirit in me says there is Nothing I can't do with the One Thing I do have...

I'll count on Him instead.

Application:
Today I Will count the things and people God has I trusted me with, but I Won't trust in them. I'll let the numbers tell me how much more I need the Lord.

Meditation Verse:
54. "So the Isrealites did everything just as the Lord had commanded Moses"
