Remember Baalam of Beor? Numbers 22:23 with the Angel of the Lord with the sword drawn in his hand?
Since I was a kid, my Dad, a pastor for 30 years now, always told me that the "angel of the Lord" was Jesus. From my own personal foray into the Torah, I think he was right. This description of the "angel of the Lord" or the "Commander of the army of the Lord" perfectly matches the description and disposition of Jesus in the book of Revelations. And the Revelations' Jesus is at the head of an army.
That's why Joshua calls him "my Lord". That's why He says in Numbers 22 "thy way is perverse before me". That's why the angel of the Lord said the exact same thing the Lord said to Moses out of the burning bush. When angels come, they only speak messages sent from the Lord. When God comes, he speaks his own message. That's why in Deuteronomy 32:41 God says, "If I whet my glittering sword." The theophanies of God in the Old Testament are just phenomenal.
Same sword. Same attitude. Same words. Same God.
