Abraham was tested to prove something to Abraham, not to Himself. GOD knows all things, He doesn't need to figure out what Abraham might do. Abraham is called to true the LORD. He is called to walk by faith and not by sight. Exodus 15:23-26 GOD tested the children of Israel. Exodus 16:4 Again we see a testing of GOD's people. Our sinful hearts when are exposed when we are tested and fail. GOD's faithfulness is proven when were are tested and remain true to GOD's Word.
What anguish may have gone on in the heart of Abraham during this time. Yet, in spite of what was likely very troubling, Abraham was obedient. We are called to show faith like unto our father Abraham. We ought to trust in GOD's provision in troubling circumstances. We are to obey (especially) when it is difficult to do so.
Abraham understood GOD's love. GOD called Abraham from the Ur of the Chaldean - they were idol worshiping, wicked people. GOD called us when we were in a like place, spiritually. We are called to come out from among the idol worshipers. We are called to a life of obedience. The One promised to come from Abraham's loins has come! As Abraham looked to the coming Messiah, we look to the risen Messiah. He is One and the Same!
The substitute caught in the thicket saved Isaac's life, the substitute caught in the wrath of GOD saved our's. As Isaac asked his father where the sacrifice was, throughout the remainder of the OT, GOD's people wondered where was the Sacrifice promised in the Garden. Just as GOD provided for Abraham, He provided for us.
The Angel of the LORD stayed Abraham's hand, the Gospel of Christ stays GOD's hand. It calls to us and we see the Lamb, just as it happened to Abraham. Our lives are full of anguish in anticipation of deliverance from calamity. GOD will provide! He is Jehovah-Jireh, Who provides. God atones, coverts, forgives, and does ALL that is necessary for our bodies and souls.
Jesus had the power to lay down His life. He alone had power to raise Himself up again from the dead. Abraham believed in the resurrection of the sacrifice (Hebrews 11:17-19). Jesus is the guarantee of our resurrection. By possessing Christ, we have the consequences of our sin expiated. This comes as the gift of GOD (Ephesians 2:8-9).
