Jesus and his disciples were invited to a wedding Cana. In order to understand this story, we must have the Jewish wedding customs and culture set as the background music while trying to dissect this episode. Normally, Jewish weddings could last up to seven days. Keeping that in mind, it is now easier to understand verse three when it reads,“When the wine ran out…”It would be quite an embarrassment to run out of wine and the wedding hasn’t concluded. Wine symbolizes joy and cheer – and many of us have run out of “wine” (joy and cheer) and the party (life) hasn’t ended. I know life can get hard sometimes – but don’t run out of wine! Bills are due, family has forsaken us, friends forgot about us – don’t run out of wine! Don’t let life outlast your peace and your joy – your wine!
Jesus tells the servants to fill six water pots to the brim with water; pour some and give it to the headwaiter. Verse nine says that the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine. In other words, Jesus took something that could not be and made it be! Water cannot become wine. They are not of the same substance. However, if you let Jesus touch you, He will make you become what other people said you could not! The headwaiter didn’t know where this new wine came from, but the servants did. This is why the world has a problem with Christians now; they don’t understand how you made it over, but you did! They don’t understand how you got the biggest promotion with the littlest education! They don’t know where you came from – like the headwaiter, but you know where you came from – like the servants who fetched the water (don’t forget where you came from). That’s why we can testify, “If it had not been for the Lord on our side…!”
In verse ten, the head waiter announces,"Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine;”This is exactly how the World operates. They will serve you the “good wine” first and when they got you, they’ll give you poor wine.” Satan tempts us with pleasure and keeps us with heartache, pain, and condemnation. But look at what the headwaiter concludes with:“but you have kept the good wine until now."Jesus works opposite of logic. If you humble yourself, you will be exalted. If you want to be the greatest, you’ll have to become the lowest. God is telling us that it may not seem like the best right now, but if you hang in there, I’ll give you the good stuff! The first shall be last and the last shall be first. Peter tells us in his epistle that if we suffer with Christ, we will reign with him.
In conclusion, hang in there for the good stuff. You have come too far to turn back now. God has not forgotten about you, nor will he let life embarrass you. When it looks like you have been depleted – God will bring out the “best” in you.
