Caleb starts Judah finishes
These three giants are he same ones it says Caleb "drove out" in Joshua 14. Here the armies of the tribe of Judah finish the job and actually kill them.
Reading a bit further down, I realize that Caleb was with them, because he was, after all, from the tribe of Judah. So either this is a continuation of the battle Caleb started while Joshua was alive or this was a more detailed telling of what exactly happened. My guess is the former.
