"great conflict" - intense agony! Suggests any struggle, contest, a battle, an action, a law or a trial. Notice in reference to Laodicea. They were neighbors of each other. They were about 1 mile apart. They were instructed in chpt 4 to exchange letters.

Laodicea stood midway between the hot springs of Hierapolis and the cold waters of Colossae. It was fed by an aqueduct from Hierapolis, the water being lukewarm when it arrived at Laodicea.
Laodicea was militarily undefendable. It's posture was one of compromise. Prophetically the word Laodicea means rule of the people. It's supposed to be the rule of God. It was a self satisfied church, and one of 2 letters out of the 7 that Jesus had nothing positive to say. It describes the church at large of today; the doctrinal deficiencies of the day. Its admonitions and remedies and exhortations focus on our issues today.
