irrelevant
as the church in America, we consistently complain of complacency amongst ourselves, and of a lack of confidence in our words amongst those outside the church. we have become irrelevant. the platitudes we preach every week, you could pick those up in any pop psychology self help book, in many online forums targeted towards family life and personal improvement, honestly, in a lot of personal common sense. so the question becomes, "why go to church, why submit to the seemingly unnecessary mores and regulations of Christianity, why commit all that time and energy to religious living, when I can get the same results without committing to something I'm not totally sold on yet?"
unfortunately, this is a valid question. the church seems to be taking a "what can we do for you" approach at the expense of the full Gospel of the Bible. of course, having a servant oriented and targeted approach to church is a great idea, but when it results in stepping on eggshells and avoiding the full truth of Scripture, we lose our "competitive advantage" so to speak. we don't trust God that His word will "not return void," so we avoid the difficult portions of Scripture, believing it will make us more relevant. however, when we abandon the full truth of the Word, we actually lose our relevance as we get lost in a sea of self help. the unique power of Scripture, offensive and irrelevant at times though it may seem, is our only key to standing up, standing out and impacting our world for Christ
