The source of peace

This Christmas my in-laws gave my husband and me a dining suite. It is something they've had for a long time and they had it refinished and repaired for us. I have just been beaming over this the last couple days! What a huge blessing for us! Today I have been trying to figure out our finances for this year, worrying over the next stage of our lives that looks like it will involve another long-distance move in a string of several in the three years since we wed. Can we afford a home? A car? I suppose reading these verses with our recent experience of being given this dining set could make me feel that the message for me is that God will provide, so I can have peace. But that provision isn't where peace comes from. There is no peace in material possessions. I will always long for my home that is found only in heaven. A house, car, and financial security can't fill that desire. Rather, these verses point to the ultimate sacrifice of Christ as the source of our peace. So, it's not that he provides for us that is important, but rather, it is his impossibly huge love for us that is so pivotal. That is what led him into suffering for us. In his love he wanted to provide for us completely... In giving us our salvation. My peace comes from knowing my place in eternity, and knowing his closeness to me in the present. It's about relationship. Peace comes from trusting him... Someone whose ultimate proof of his love for us is the fact that he died for us! How can I doubt love like that? So, I still don't know how things will work out this year, but God will be with me... And in that I have peace. A peace beyond any doubt.
