Be Patient, Promises Take Time
It had been 10 years since Abram received His last Word of promise from the Lord. We read these scriptures from sentence to sentence, neglecting to see the span that transpires from one event to another. So when, God himself specifically references time, it is important to note.
In this case, it had been 10 years since the Word mentions Gods promise of descendants through Sarai to Abram. Time began to wain on Sarai's belief, and Abrams as well. So rather than continue to wait on the Lord for the promises He made to them, they decided to take matters into their own hands.
Anytime we lose heart and take matters into our own hands, we create more mess for ourselves, which we see later in the next verses, when Sarai and Abram feel the pain of this decision.
