What happened with the Tower of Babel?

The story of the tower of Babel has always been a point of confusion for me. What does God mean by, "Now nothing will be impossible for them?" And why were the people building a tower in the first place? I know that God is concerned with where a person's heart is above all else. This leads me to believe that the people wanted to build a tower for reasons they knew went against God's will. The act of building a tower obviously wasn't the real problem. I doubt God has anything against towers. The problem was the motivation behind building the tower. I don't know what that exact motivation was, but it definitely was not in accordance with God's will.
