This is a tough situation for Job, and a tough idea for all of us. There's no doubt that Job's situation looked as bad as the retribution you'd expect to befall the life of a blatant sinner. Job has no idea that this in itself is a test of his allegiance to God. It's also a foreshadowing of what is to come when Jesus bears the sins of the elect as if they're his own. The tough thing to come to terms with in this act of God is that this pain and this trial could last until it kills a man. Who are we to put a limit on God's testing? It can hurt beyond words but Jesus' lowest moment made possible his greatest glory.
