God Keeps His Covenant
In Genesis 16, God proves that no matter how much we screw up, he would always keep his promises and covenants with us. God told Abram that he'd make him a father with a big family, that many generations would be born from him. When Abram started to doubt, he took matters into his own hands, got Hagar, Sarai's maid pregnant, and she gave birth to Ishmael. Now, I didn't make the connection until I heard a Pastor teach on it, but Ishmael is considered the father of Islam. In Genesis 17, God promised Abram that he'd be the father of many nations, and God had to keep his promise, even though Ishmael was not who he had intended to be the one. The religion of Muslim was founded through Ishmael and is in keeping with the promise that God made to Abraham.
This teaches me that even though, God kept his promise, it was altered because Abram decided to take things into his own hands instead of depending on God to follow through on what he said. The only question I have is that later on in the bible, it says that "Faith without works is dead" (James 2:26); how do you know how much work to do to counterbalance with your faith? When do you cross over that threshold of doing too much and doing not enough?
